About the Role

Are you passionate about shaping places and influencing future growth? The City of Bunbury is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Strategic Planning Officer to join our dynamic City Planning team on a maximum-term basis to cover maternity leave.

This is a key role within the City Planning team, responsible for contributing to the delivery of strategic planning projects and the preparation, monitoring, and implementation of the Local Planning Framework. You'll work collaboratively across departments, with stakeholders, and partner authorities to support the council's ambitions for sustainable development and community wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide mentoring, guidance and support to team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing and collaboration.
  • Deliver strategic planning projects, and review strategic planning documents relevant to the City's Local Planning Policy Framework.
  • Undertake research and technical analysis and provide specialised advice and recommendations on strategic (environmental, social and economic) matters.
  • Provide specialist advice on planning policy to colleagues, elected members, and external partners.
  • Represent the City at meetings and in working groups as required.

About You

We're looking for someone with:

  • Tertiary or post graduate qualification comparable to a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning or equivalent
  • Eligibility for corporate membership of the Planning Institute of Australia.
  • Proven ability to support direct reports through performance feedback, mentorship and coaching, and by cultivating a collaborative, high-achieving team environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of the planning system and procedures, principles, policies, and legislation relevant to WA.
  • Significant experience in strategic planning, ideally within a local authority.
  • A strong understanding of current planning legislation, policy, and guidance.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and project management skills.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively to deliver high-quality outcomes.
