We are looking for a Senior Adviser – Strategy and Policy to join the team and support the continued development, evaluation, and implementation of Rio Tinto’s decarbonisation strategy and as part of that advocating for policies aimed at advancing climate goals and sustainable development. The Decarbonisation Office sits within the central Rio Tinto Energy & Climate team with the role reporting to the Manager Investment, Policy and Strategy.

Reporting to the Manager Investment, Policy and Strategy and working in a collaborative community as part of the Rio Tinto Energy & Climate team within the Decarbonisation Office, your responsibilities will include:

  • Understanding current and future policy and regulatory opportunities for decarbonisation and other climate-related initiatives for Australia and/or other jurisdictions in which we operate

  • Assist in the preparation, co-ordination and syndication of submissions made by Rio Tinto in relation to the development and reform of government policy and regulation

  • Assist in responding to requests from policy setters and industry bodies

  • Support climate policy related meetings and discussions with external stakeholders

  • Provide strategic advice to align policy efforts to support decarbonisation investments

  • Conduct financial analysis of climate-related policies

  • Coordinating with and supporting internal Rio Tinto stakeholders to inform organizational decisions related to climate

  • Assist in preparing internal and external presentations and materials related to climate policy and strategy

What you will bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

  • Bachelor’s degree in a policy or economics related field, and/or technical environmental, engineering or commerce skills would be beneficial, noting the role’s focus on enabling investment in industrial decarbonisation.

  • A high level of demonstrated experience in climate, decarbonisation, policy or  regulatory affairs

  • Understanding of climate and energy-related policy and regulation including EU CBAM,  Safeguard Mechanism, ACCU Scheme

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills coupled with business acumen

  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across disciplines

  • Highly organised with strong project management and coordination skills
