About the role:

Walgett Shire Council is seeking a capable and committed Roads Coordinator to take the lead in the day-to-day coordination of road maintenance and construction activities across the Shire’s extensive network. With responsibility for over 2,000 kilometres of unsealed roads and approximately 600 kilometres of sealed urban and local roads, this role is critical to ensuring regional connectivity, agricultural productivity, and community accessibility.

This is a practical, hands-on leadership role. The successful candidate will work closely with field staff to plan and deliver operational programs, while also mentoring and supporting team members to develop their skills and uphold Council’s high standards. This role requires a leader who is as effective in the field as they are in the office—someone who will gain the respect of the workforce by leading from the front, setting clear expectations, and being actively involved in daily operations.

You will work closely with the Manager Roads to translate strategic works programs into operational reality, ensuring resources are used efficiently and works are delivered to specification, on time, and within budget. You will be responsible for rostering, plant allocation, worksite inspections, job planning, and responding to emerging maintenance needs.

A strong emphasis is placed on workplace health and safety, environmental compliance, and quality outcomes. The Roads Coordinator must ensure that every crew under their supervision operates in a safe and structured manner.

This role is ideally suited to someone who understands that regional roads are not just infrastructure—they are the lifeblood of a community, essential for economic development, emergency access, and quality of life. Someone who is committed to mentoring and developing frontline supervisors—providing guidance, support, and leadership without undermining their authority or taking over their responsibilities. The ideal candidate will foster confidence and capability within the team by coaching supervisors through challenges, encouraging ownership of outcomes, and offering practical advice that builds their skills and decision-making capacity, while still allowing them to lead their own crews effectively.

The successful applicant will bring both operational discipline and community-minded leadership to one of the most critical service areas in Council.

About you:

• A true on-the-ground leader who mentors, teaches, and leads by example – as comfortable behind a desk as they are on a job site.
• Someone who is committed to mentor supervisors, whilst not taking over.
• Experienced in rural road construction and maintenance, with a deep understanding of the value of well-connected transport routes.
• Able to coordinate daily operations while maintaining high safety, environmental, and quality standards.
• Respected by crews because you listen, work alongside them, and foster a team environment built on action and integrity.
• Organised and hands-on, with strong communication and reporting skills.
• Holds a Certificate IV in Civil Construction Supervision (or equivalent experience), White Card, Traffic Control qualifications, and a current Class C Driver’s Licence.
• Safety is your first priority, and your leadership turns policy into practice – shaping a positive workplace culture through your own behaviour.
